Herringfleet Campsite is run by Lowestoft & District Scout Association and is set in a section of woodland, which surrounds an extensive inland stretch of water known as Fritton Lake.

Clearings among trees provide pleasant camping areas around a central open space, and the lake is approached by tracks through the wood.

he land forms part of the Somerleyton Estate, and Lowestoft District Scouts have enjoyed the use of various campsites on the estate by kind permission of both the present and the former Lord Somerleyton for many years.

After the Second World War, an area of land at Herringfleet was made available as a more permanent campsite, and the present Herringfleet Campsite was born.

In addition to the fine outdoor camping areas, the site now has a large wooden building, with mains services and a basic kitchen area providing indoor accommodation.

Fritton Lake is the largest enclosed water in East Anglia, and is fed by springs. It is available for swimming and for boating (no power craft allowed on lake), but, as the lake is deeper in parts, only the shallower shore arm should be used for swimming.

Adjacent to this is a shower and toilet block including a separate facility with wheelchair to a toilet and shower.

There is a good campfire area, and an inter-denominational chapel.

Lord Somerleyton takes a keen interest in the Scout movement and is president of the local association.

He regularly visits the campsite and appreciates efforts of all campers to respect and maintain trees and the of our site.
