Scouts help to launch new information leaflet

21 January 2015

Lowestoft scouts recently helped to launch a new information leaflet that could encourage their friends to join scouting.

The youngsters from three of the district’s groups were invited by Suffolk Police & Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore to join representatives from the North Suffolk Army Cadet Force and Suffolk Police Cadets to promote the pocket size leaflet that lists contact details for all the uniformed youth organisations in the Lowestoft area.

Mr Passmore said, “Giving our young people a good start in life is crucially important, so I am pleased to support this campaign to encourage young people to join uniformed youth organisations.

“I am a great supporter of youth organisations, particularly uniformed ones, as uniform is a great leveller. As a former scout leader of 1st Eyegroup I have seen first-hand how such organisations help young people develop personal, communication and leadership skills, confidence and self-respect and the impact this can have on career prospects.

“I am keen to support the work of youth organisations that help to make Suffolk a safer place in which to live, work, travel and invest. There are some super youngsters about and also a lot of opportunities – we just need to match them up with each other and that is the purpose of the new leaflet.”

With financial help from the Reserve Forces Cadet Association this national initiative is being trialled in Lowestoft before it is widened to cover the whole of Suffolk. The aim is for anyone who comes into contact with young people either when at work or in their leisure time to have the leaflet ready to hand out. A thousand leaflets have been printed and distributed to police and fire officers as well as to all the leaders of the youth organisations listed to make them as widely available as possible.

Mel Buck, Lowestoft Scout’s District Commissioner added “we are keen to give all young people a chance in life and offer them the opportunity to do some exciting and fun things – but we realise some may not know what is available and who they need to contact to find out more. The new leaflet should address this.”

Contact details listed in the leaflet include those of the :- Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force, Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Brigade, Girl Guiding, Scouts, Sea Cadet Corps, St John Ambulance and Volunteer Police Cadets.
